In 1993, Girls lacrosse came to Canandaigua Academy! Through the efforts of Athletic Director Mike Foster to substantiate Title IX, Coach Anne Sherlock began the program with a club team consisting of 33 players. Their season consisted of 11 games with a record of 4-6-1, playing against other club teams from Orchard Park, Skaneateles, Ithaca and Fairport. Colleen Sheridan, Molly Foster, Erin Boggan, and Kate Morga were some of the female pioneers of Canandaigua Girls Lacrosse.
It was a rough start. Goalies sometimes played with out protective equipment and nets on goals had more athletic tape than net. At one game, a killdeer laid four eggs on the field. With no officials or scorekeepers, cones were put around the nest and the girls played around it!
A Varsity program began in 1994 coached by Ms. Sherlock, with Kate Weigert assisting with the club team. The following year Sue (Bancroft) Ellis came on board to coach the first Junior Varsity team. Lauren York began the first modified program in 1999 and with teams set in place at all levels the program was off and running!
Today, our Girls Lacrosse Program consists of an incredibly talented varsity team coached by Sue Ellis and assisted by Lauren York. This history-making year included co-sharing the Finger Lakes Championship and making its first appearance in Section V Class A Semi-Finals. A well-developed Junior Varsity team, two Modified teams and a youth program consisting of almost 50 3rd through 5th graders ensure the future of the sport. We also now host summer leagues and amps.
Canandaigua is creating a rich history and tradition in the Finger Lakes and Statewide thanks to these encouraging and ambitious visionaries.
