Girls win First Ever Sectional Title

The Canandaigua Girls fulfilled two of their goals this year by beating Brighton, long-time nemesis, and winning the Section V, Class B championship. They did so in the dramatic fashion that we've become used to in the big games this year. Going down 4-0 with Brighton scoring on almost all of their first possessions made alot of us watching quite nervous. But that didn't even phase our Canandaigua Girls. Making big plays all over the field, the girls slowly crawled back into the game and ended the first half down 6-4. The second half was a series of close and fall back, and with about 7 mins. left the team found themselves down 3. Down but, as we found out in the Men's NCAA championship game, not Out. With 10 seconds left in regulation time, Alyssa Johnston scored to tie the game at 10-10. There was some drama and tense moments when with 3 seconds left after winning the draw, Abbey Friend fed Kelly Condon down field who found Haley Marafioti open near the goal. Her shot seemed to have beaten the horn and was initially called good, but was overridden by another official as having crossed the plane after the horn, forcing overtime.

In overtime both teams played a little cat and mouse waiting for the right opportunity. With time running out in the second OT and Brighton playing possession ball, Taylor D'Amore had a beautiful defensive takeaway in front of the Brighton bench and cleared the ball into the offensive end. With Time running out, Alyssa Johnston again drove the 8 meter and was fouled. With 22 seconds left on the clock she found the back of the net on the free shot to give CA an 11-10 lead. As time expired after the draw, the CA defense, stingy all day, forced an off balance shot that goalkeeper Erin O'Donnell got a shoulder on knocking away the game tying goal and giving the Canandaigua girls their first sectional crown, and knocking Brighton off the mountain as the top team in Class B in Section V.

The team (19-2) will now start the state tournament and will face Section 6 winner West Seneca West (5-13) in the Western Regional, being played at Brighton High School at 6pm on Saturday, 6/6. Good luck players and coaches in the run to a state title.

Boys face Irondequoit in the Sectional Final...again.

The game will be played Friday night, 6/5, at 5:30 at St John Fisher college. Come out and support the team if you can - Irondequoit will be traveling with a huge fan base and will be eager to extract some revenge after last year's Class A sectional championship drubbing.
